GeekTrade Summary

GeekTrade is an independent New Zealand online auction web site with a focus on technology and computing. Users may list their technology items for sale, and bid on or buy items from others in a self-contained online environment.

Auctions will run for a certain amount of time based on the seller's preference. To purchase an item, a user must hold the highest bidding position at the time of auction closure, or use the Buy Now facility to buy the item immediately at a set cost.

GeekTrade also provides a wide variety of brand-new products through several Dealer membership accounts, making GeekTrade is a great way to trade in both new and used technology products.

Being an independent venture and wholly New Zealand-owned and operated, GeekTrade is committed to collaborating with it's community of users to help improve and guide the direction of it's web site (see the Community section).

The Buying and Selling Process

To purchase an item, you must place a bid that is equal to or higher than the "reserve price" of the listing, and maintain the highest bid position until the auction closes. If the seller has added a "Buy Now" price to the listing, you have the opportunity to purchase the item at that fixed price immediately. The Buy Now option becomes unavailable as soon as the Reserve Price has been met.

If you have won the bidding for an auction, you will be notified via email and provided with the contact details of the seller. It is then up to you and the seller to initiate contact and arrange payment and delivery.

If the auction remains unsold, the seller has the opportunity to relist the item. If this happens, any bidders or watchers of the item will be notified via email.

Note: It is important not to display your contact details anywhere on the GeekTrade web site, as this could lead to sales outside the web site, and degrade the auction experience for other members. Please only provide contact details after a successful sale.

Costs

Selling items on GeekTrade can incur certain costs based on the outcome of the auction, and whether any special advertising was applied to the listing.

Whenever a cost is charged to a user, it is debited from that user's GeekTrade account. Each user begins their GeekTrade account with a nil balance ($0.00), and must "top-up" their account to cover these costs. Topping up your account requires you to transfer a payment to GeekTrade either by Direct Credit or PayPal, which will then be applied to your account.

Each time you successfully sell an item on GeekTrade, a percentage of the total sale cost is debited from your account. This amount is known as the "success fee" .

"Promotions" are optional advertising extras that can be applied to listings to increase their exposure. Some promotions are free of charge, others have an associated cost.

Promotion Cost
Auto-Relist
Your auction will automatically relist upon expiration.
Free

Your auction's photo is displayed in list view.
$0.20
Bold Title
A bold style is applied to your auction title while in list view.

$0.75

Success Fee
2.5% of the total sale price.

Note that it is possible for your account to go into debt after selling an item. When this happens, you will be unable to list additional new items, or purchase items from other members. Adding a promotion to a listing however, requires that your account balance be high enough to cover the cost at the time.

Note: You cannot pay for items won through GeekTrade with your GeekTrade account

Auction Questions and Comments

If you would like to get more information about a particular listing from the seller, you can ask a question using the Questions and Comments section at the bottom of the auction page. As a seller, you will be notified of the question via email, and given the opportunity to reply. The questioner will be notified if a response is given.

Sellers may use the Questions and Comments facility to post a comment on their auction after the bidding has started.

Note: Only questions that have been answered will appear viewable to other members.
